Project Overview
When the Trottas purchased their lakefront home, the property included an older, grandfathered enclosed boathouse. In this case, “grandfathered” means the structure had been approved under earlier regulations but no longer conformed to Duke Energy’s current shoreline-management guidelines.
At the time, Duke Energy still allowed qualifying floating docks to be converted into stationary structures. We were able to take advantage of that opportunity and convert the Trottas’ entire dock—more than 1,800 square feet—into a fully stationary structure. It remains one of the largest private docks on Lake Wylie.
Shortly after the project was completed, Duke Energy stopped allowing floating-to-stationary dock conversions. Because the Trottas’ dock was approved and built before that rule changed, they can continue enjoying this exceptionally large structure today.
The dock was designed with durability and minimal upkeep in mind, including Trex composite decking and Trex Signature aluminum railing. Perhaps the best testament to its construction is that, since completing it in 2016, we haven’t had to return for a single maintenance-related issue. Nearly a decade later, it continues to serve the Trotta family exactly as intended.
The project also became a showcase for our work in the neighborhood. Since completing the Trottas’ dock, we’ve had the opportunity to build docks for both of their next-door neighbors, as well as the property directly across the water from them. We’re grateful for the trust and referrals that allowed WaterJack to become such a visible part of this stretch of Lake Wylie.
